چکیده

The National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2001, Public Law 106-398, Congress mandated in Section 220 that “It shall be a goal of the Armed Forces to achieve the fielding of unmanned, remotely controlled technology such that... by 2015, one-third of the operational ground combat vehicles are unmanned” [1]. In response to the congressional mandate, the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) initiated the Grand Challenge competition. The goal of the competition was to promote and accelerate research and development of autonomous robotic ground vehicles that can navigate itself in offand on-road terrain. The motivation is to develop technologies that will keep military personnel off the battlefield and out of harm’s way.

The Sting Racing Teams Entry to the Urban Challenge

Autonomous navigation in urban environments inevitably leads to having to switch between various, sometimes con icting control tasks. Sting Racing, a collaboration between Georgia Tech and SAIC, has developed a modular control architecture for this purpose and this paper describes the operation and de!nition of this architecture through so-called nested hybrid automata. We show how to map the re...

Little Ben: The Ben Franklin Racing Team's Entry in the 2007 DARPA Urban Challenge

This paper describes “Little Ben,” an autonomous ground vehicle constructed by the Ben Franklin Racing Team for the 2007 DARPA Urban Challenge in under a year and for less than $250,000. The sensing, planning, navigation, and actuation systems for Little Ben were carefully designed to meet the performance demands required of an autonomous vehicle traveling in an uncertain urban environment. We ...

Position and Orientation Data Requirements for Precise Autonomous Vehicle Navigation

The challenge of navigating an autonomous vehicle over large distances was illustrated in 2005 at the DARPA Grand Challenge when 4 out of 23 Teams successfully completed a 132 mile course within a 10 hour time limit. What the Grand Challenge revealed is that one of the most critical components of a successful autonomous vehicle was the reliability of accurate pose (positioning and orientation e...
